In circa 2007/2008, GVMA Archivist Barbara Bell created a series of articles on early Vernon businesses based on excerpts from primary source material. We would like to share them again here with you, with any updates on how the businesses have evolved since the time the articles were written. Please note, clicking on the images will enlarge them.
Notes: The Victoria Hotel was located at 2829 34th Street, which is now the site of the Orchard Valley Retirement Home.
2. The National Cafe
Notes: The National Cafe was located at 2916 30th Avenue, which is now the Italian Kitchen. The owners have changed since the publication of this article.

Notes: The Kal Hotel was located at 3004 30th Avenue.
5. Mackenzie's Menswear
Notes: Mackenzie's Men's Wear was located at 3212 30th Avenue, which is now Casa Bella Bedding Boutique.
6. Jacques Jewellers
Notes: Jacques Jewellers was located at 3122 30th Avenue, which is now Victoria Lane Brides.
7. The Hudson's Bay Store
Notes: The Hudson's Bay Store was located at 3201 30th Avenue, which is now the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. The following photos show the HBC store in three of its four Vernon locations.
8. The Vernon News
Notes: The address of the 1897 building was 3026 30th Avenue. The address of the final location was 3309 31st Avenue. The final edition of the Vernon News was released on May 17, 1996.
9. Megaw's General Store
Notes: The Sun Valley Mall now stands on the former site of Megaw's department store. A comparison of this building with the two Megaw buildings in the photographs below will reveal some similarities in construction and architectural details. Notice the shape of the front of the building and the design of the main entrance. Look for the use of round iron posts on the exterior. If viewing the building in person, look for pressed metal ceiling tiles above the doorways.
